O médico Eric Parry faz as suas rondas pela aldeia, enquanto a mulher grávida, Irene, vagueia pensa na distância que cresceu entre os dois. Numa quinta próxima vive Rita Simmons, também à espera de um bebé, e mulher do agricultor Bill. Quando o frio de Dezembro dá lugar a violentas nevões, os dois casais vêem as suas vidas começar a desmoronar-se.
